Dedicated Devizes volunteers have been praised by a national charity for their 35 years of fundraising for vulnerable children.

The Barnardo’s store in Wine Street arranged a special celebration for three of its team.

Chris Barter has been volunteering for 15 years while Jenny Russell and Sue Smart have both been volunteering for ten years. Together, the ladies donate around 1,400 hours each year.

As part of UK Charity Week‘s Volunteer Day, Official Partner Charity Barnardo’s presented them with flowers, cards and a specially-decorated cake.

Chris, aged 66, used to work as a cashier in a local chemist. She said: “I caught the same bus home as a former volunteer and he kept telling me how everyone at the Barnardo’s shop was so friendly and fun, and I liked the flexibility of being able to fit it in around other commitments.

“It was only meant to be temporary but it’s an amazing place to work.”

Jenny, aged 83, started volunteering after seeing a recruitment poster in the shop window.

The former teacher said: “I love meeting people. I used to live in Yorkshire so I particularly enjoy chatting to customers when I recognise their accent is from the north of England. We talk about the places where I lived and worked before I moved down to Wiltshire.”

Sue, aged 78, was also attracted by a poster in the window.

The former secretary said: “My mother used to help at the charity’s previous store down the road so I already knew it was a really nice place to volunteer. It’s always good fun.”

The Barnardo’s store is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and on Sundays from 10am-4pm.

The team always welcome donations of good-quality clothes, books, toys, games, accessories and bric-a-brac, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers. Telephone (01380) 721247.
