PEOPLE with a military connection living in the south west of England are being invited to enjoy complimentary homemade cakes and a brew at a charity’s seafront hotel.

The RAF Association – the charity that provides welfare support to the RAF family – is laying on the refreshments at an open day at its Flowerdown House hotel, Weston-super-Mare, on 13 February.

The hotel’s catering team hopes its traditional-recipe cakes will tempt people along to sample what’s on offer at the hotel for a range of guests, including veterans in need of a supported break.

RAF veteran Ron Hopwood (91) enjoys a stay at an RAF Association hotel.

People who have served in the RAF, or are a spouse, widow or widower of someone who has served, are especially welcome, as are people wanting to check out the hotel’s facilities for a friend or relative with an RAF link.

The Association subsidises the cost of its breaks for members of the RAF family as part of its work to promote wellbeing.

Flowerdown House manager Nick Rickwood said:

“We offer a cosy home from home environment where people can relax while our staff take the strain.

“Guests are offered three meals per day, local excursions and early evening entertainment as part of their holiday. Staff are on-hand round the clock, and are specially trained to provide extra support to anyone who needs it.”

He added: “While many of our guests are very active and independent, we also host older single people and couples, including couples where one of them is usually the caregiver.”

The hotel’s open day will run from 10am to 3pm, and visitors can just turn up. Staff will be giving tours of the building’s facilities throughout the day.

The RAF Association has two other hotels, in Lytham St Anne’s in Lancashire and Rothbury near Morpeth in Northumberland, and welcomes around 2,500 guests each year.

All three sites have their own garden with patio, a TV lounge, bar and a garden room. All bedrooms are en-suite, and some are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

The charity is currently offering discounted rates for seven-night full-board bookings for breaks taken before the end of March.
