CHILDREN’S hospice charity, Shooting Star Children’s Hospices Sunrise Series began, as 30 intrepid trekkers took on the ultimate challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon at night to reach the summit for sunrise.
The trekkers’ immense efforts were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise as dawn broke. One participant who took part in the trek said:
“It was a fantastic experience, only heightened by the knowledge that it was raising vital funds for such a great cause.”
The challenge has raised an amazing £17,000 so far.
The Sunrise Snowdon Trek is just one challenge in a programme of Sunrise events taking place in 2022 for the charity, as the much-loved series makes a welcome return this year.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices who support babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families across West London and Surrey, are encouraging people to come together and shine bright at their unique Sunrise Walks in Richmond and Guildford this summer.
A more sedate challenge than ascending a mountain, both walks begin at 4.30am and give walkers a chance to see the beautiful sights and picturesque surroundings as the sun rises – a perfect way to start a summer Sunday morning.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the renowned Richmond Sunrise Walk returns on Sunday 29 May. The walk, which is ideal for families, takes participants past famous sights including the River Thames, Hampton Court and the beautiful and wildlife packed Bushy and Richmond Parks.
Walkers can also enjoy the splendour of the Surrey countryside with the Guildford Sunrise Walk on Sunday 26 June. This more rural route follows parts of the North Downs Way, the River Wey, and St Martha’s on the Hill, rewarding walkers after a steep ascent with unmissable views bathed in the morning light.
Both Richmond and Guildford routes have the options of a 10km or 20km route, giving everyone from family, friends, and the dog a chance to enjoy the sights at their leisure.
The early hour isn’t the only element that sets these walks apart from other challenges, they also offer the perfect opportunity to reflect, celebrate and remember loved ones. Walkers can also celebrate their achievements at the finish line with a post-walk picnic breakfast to recharge and refuel, a medal to mark the occasion and an opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere with fellow walkers.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices hope to raise £110,000 in order to continue to provide a lifeline for the families they support. Entry fees range from £5 for a child and £20 – £25 for an adult, depending on the chosen route. Sign up before the end of April to received 25% offadult registration using the code APRIL25.
