QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright partner Zahra Manji, who is usually Worcester-based, took to the track recently for the Hackney Half-Marathon to raise vital funds for West Mercia Women’s Aid, an organisation dedicated to supporting women break free from domestic violence.

The £375 raised from the run has been added to the firm’s fundraising tally of more than £8,000, which has been raised over QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright’s three-year involvement with the women’s group.

Money raised goes towards staffing the West Mercia Women’s Aid 24-hour domestic abuse helpline, facilitating their three women’s refuges and providing an outreach service across Hereford, Worcester and Wyre Forest that focuses on group programmes, education and employment opportunities, as well as providing access to an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) service.

It is not the first time the team at the West Midlands-based firm have donned spandex to raise funds for these vital domestic violence support services. Partner Amanda Middleton organised a team of six dedicated cyclists, including herself and supported by an additional two helpers, for a sponsored marathon ride just last month and raised close to £550 from that one event.

West Mercia Women’s Aid CEO Sue Coleman and Regional IDVA Team Manager Lisa Peplow shared their appreciation for QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright’s commitment to helping end domestic abuse and supporting those through the other side of it.

Sue and Lisa said:

“Parkinson Wright is committed to making a real difference when it comes to tackling domestic abuse. They hold daily ‘drop-ins’ for women, providing expert legal advice from solicitors who understand the destructive impact of living with coercion, abuse and aggression.

“They also go the extra mile in their support for West Mercia Women’s Aid – holding regular fund-raising activities and donating generously to support our work. Making a difference – in every sense of the word.”

The Law Society recently recognised Suzanne Oldnall, Head of the Domestic Abuse Team at QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright, for her many years of dedication in helping victims of domestic abuse across Worcestershire, presenting her with the President’s Special Award. She has helped many victims escape violent and abusive relationships, often making immediate applications to the court for an emergency injunction in order to ensure their safety.

Suzanne is also a key campaigner for West Mercia Women’s Aid and said more needs to be done.

Suzanne said:

“Domestic violence is a seriously underfunded area; more needs to be done to support anyone who falls victim to controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, whether from a one-off incident or ongoing abuse.

“QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright is proud to offer an appointment-free drop-in service for anyone who needs it and we can also help secure Legal Aid in a number of circumstances. Beyond the legal support we can offer, the work that West Mercia Women’s Aid does is so important to ensuring women’s overall safety and wellbeing.”

QualitySolicitors Parkinson Wright Managing Partner, Cyril Arridge, added:

“It’s often incredibly difficult for those who suffer from domestic abuse to come forward either because they fear for their safety, they don’t believe anything can be done or they’re not aware of the support that is available to them. Suzanne and her team, like the team at West Mercia Women’s Aid, do an incredible job of taking swift action and providing wrap-around supports. We’re humbled to be able to contribute to the work that West Mercia Women’s Aid does and we will continue to support them.”

In the last year, an estimated two million women and men between the ages of 16-59 have been a victim to domestic abuse; 1.3 million women were a victim to abuse and 695,000 men were victims.
