Smile Train UK: How to Change a Child’s Life in Memory

DONATING in memory of a loved one is a special way to celebrate one life by saving another. Whether it’s through taking part in a challenge, making a one-off donation, or even setting up a tribute fund, there are many ways to help a child with cleft in memory of a loved one.

Every day, 540 babies around the world are born with a cleft. Smile Train, the largest international cleft charity, empowers local medical professionals around the world with training and financial support to provide free cleft treatment in their own communities, and generous donations from the public enable Smile Train to keep carrying out this life-changing work across the globe.

For this month’s column, we wanted to raise awareness of Smile Train’s in-memory platform and delve into the various ways you can start fundraising in memory of a loved one, and in turn, change a life forever.

  • Take part in a challenge in memory

By joining Smile Train’s Team EMPOWER, you can run, walk, or cycle in memory of a loved one and turn your miles into smiles!

Team EMPOWER gives people of all abilities the opportunity to use their race or challenge to raise money that provides free cleft surgery and comprehensive care to children in resource-poor countries worldwide. For more information on upcoming races and how to get involved, please visit: https://www.smiletrain.org.uk/get-involved/team-empower.

  • Make a donation

1 in every 700 babies is born with a cleft. In the UK, cleft surgery is usually carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However, hundreds of thousands of children in resource-poor communities worldwide do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they desperately need.

Donating to Smile Train will help provide a forever smile and second chance at life to a child living with an untreated cleft. If you’d like to make a one-off donation online in memory of a loved one, Smile Train would be delighted to send a thank you and tribute card if requested.

  • Create a tribute fund

A tribute fund is an online page where you, your family and your friends can share memories of your loved one whilst raising funds for children living with cleft around the world, through individual donations or fundraising events.

Setting up a tribute fund is simple and can be a great way to raise funds for a cause that your loved one supported.

  • Order donation envelopes for a collection

If you are organising a collection in memory, Smile Train can also provide information and envelopes for you to collect funds at a funeral or celebration of life.

Over the last 20 years, Smile Train has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every person in need with a cleft has access to the care they deserve.
