Dan Healy
Dan Healy is taking on the Sheffield Half Marathon to raise funds for Neurocare – the brain injury charity that supports the Neurology Department which saved his life ten years ago.

Dan was just 19 when he was involved in a serious road traffic accident and suffered bleeding on his brain requiring neurological surgery, twice.

After having part of his skull removed and a titanium plate fitted, the teenager spent two months at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Neurocare is a charity that raises money to support patients receiving treatment for brain injuries, tumours and complex neurological conditions at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

To support Neurocare’s work, Dan, his brother Dec, and two friends, Josh Schwartz and Will Thompson will join thousands of runners taking part in this year’s Asda Foundation Sheffield Half Marathon.

Sheffield born Dan said:

“I am forever grateful to Neurocare, their outstanding staff and the incredible services that they provide. If it wasn’t for the charity, I probably wouldn’t be here today.

“To mark ten years since Neurocare saved my life, my friends, brother and I wanted to give something back so we decided to run the Sheffield Half Marathon and help save more lives, just like mine was saved – thank you Neurocare.”

Neurocare is part of Sheffield Hospitals Charity (SHC). Rebecca Slow, Community and Events Fundraiser at SHC, commented:

“At Neurocare we are passionate about raising funds to help improve the care and treatment of patients. It’s amazing to hear stories like Dan’s who with the support of the great work of the local NHS is able to live a full life.

“We would like to thank Dan, Dec, and their friends Will and Josh for running on behalf of Neurocare and would encourage anyone thinking of participating in the half marathon on behalf of Sheffield Hospitals Charity to get in touch as we still have places left.”

The Sheffield Half Marathon has been going for more than 35 years and will take place at 9.30am on Sunday 29 March 2020.
