Running for Nan: Freddie’s Mission to Beat Dementia

19-year-old Freddie Amy is preparing to take on the 2025 London Marathon in support of Dementia UK, inspired by his beloved grandmother’s battle with dementia.

Freddie’s motivation to run the iconic race comes from a deeply personal place. His grandmother, Jutta Sharp (89), was diagnosed with dementia during the pandemic — a reality that has left a lasting impact on the young runner.

Freddie explained:

“I’ve seen firsthand the toll dementia takes on a loved one, and I wanted to do something that could make a difference for my grandmother and others facing the same struggle.”

Taking place on Sunday 27 April 2025, the London Marathon will see thousands of runners from all walks of life pounding the streets of the capital. Freddie is part of a growing wave of young people stepping up to major fundraising challenges, determined to make a difference.

He said:

“Running the London Marathon is a huge challenge for me, but it’s also a way to raise awareness and bring people together for a cause that’s so important.”

Freddie has set himself a fundraising target of £2,000, with all proceeds going to Dementia UK – a charity providing vital support to families affected by dementia through specialist Admiral Nurses.

Beyond crossing the finish line, Freddie hopes his efforts will inspire other young people to get involved with causes close to their hearts.

He added:

“The goal isn’t just to finish the race but to inspire others, no matter their age, to step up and take action. If we can all contribute in some way, even a small effort can make a big impact.”
