Quarriers staff with boxes full of winter essentials for homeless young people
Quarriers, one of Scotland’s leading health and social care charities, has launched its annual Box of Hope Appeal which aims to help homeless youngsters this winter.

Now in its seventh year, the social care charity is appealing for help in spreading a little Christmas cheer through a donation of a Box of Hope containing essentials for winter and is aiming to provide boxes for young people who will spend Christmas at one of Quarriers’ homeless services in Glasgow and the west.

The incentive also hopes to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by some of society’s most vulnerable and isolated people as a Box of Hope could be the only gift a young person receives this Christmas.

There are three Boxes of Hope available to help to spread festive cheer. These include:

  • A £2 donation could give a young person a selection box or their favourite chocolate on Christmas morning
  • A £6 donation will provide a young person with a box of toiletries such as bubble bath or shower gel to pamper and care for themselves over Christmas
  • A £10 donation would keep a young person cosy all winter with a box which includes gloves or a scarf, along with essentials and Christmas goodies

Alice Harper, Chief Executive for Quarriers said:

“For many, Christmas can be a particularly trying time of year. There is so much focus on spending time with loved ones and the giving and receiving of presents and for many, this brings their circumstances into even starker contrast.

“Sometimes these young people have such a big face on – they’re trying to tell the world ‘I can do this, I don’t need anyone’. Our Support Workers tell us that they put up so many barriers, but then you find them lying on the bed, breaking their heart.”

“To be a young person facing homelessness at any time of year, but particularly at Christmas, is extremely challenging. Many are left feeling that they have nowhere to turn to and no one to rely on but this is where Quarriers steps in.

“Thanks to donations from generous individuals our staff are able to bring some festive cheer into these youngsters’ lives by providing them with a safe place to stay, food, warmth and some basic possessions.

“Our Box of Hope appeal is vital as it gives young people who have had a hard start in life some joy and most importantly, some hope towards a brighter future.”

Quarriers’ services help young people to turn their lives around by working with them to build essential life skills such as budgeting, cooking and health and emotional wellbeing. It works with youngsters to ensure they can access a range of employment, training and educational opportunities and assists in finding suitable accommodation, helping them to build the foundations for their future.
