PLAYERS at Oxford City FC swapped boots for clubs when the National League North team held its first charity golf day at Oxford Golf Club in support of the Hoops Foundation.
The county’s oldest club hosted players, coaching staff, sponsors and fans on its Harry Colt designed course which is set in 144 acres of parkland less than two miles from Oxford city centre.
First-team players Josh Ashby, Zac McEachran and Aaron Drewe were among those who tested their swing – and centre-forward Zac ended the day victorious having won the four-ball competition with the Par-Tee Boys.
In total, generous golfers helped raise £2,985 for the Hoops Foundation with the final figure boosted by a number of silent auction prizes including a golf masterclass with Head PGA professional Joe Pepperell, Club Wembley tickets for next month’s FA Cup semi-finals and a signed book by Arsenal legend Martin Keown.
Steve Greenwood, General Manager at Oxford Golf Club, said:
“It was our pleasure to welcome the Oxford City FC squad to our course, and they certainly booked the weather for the day.
“Charity golf days are an excellent way of bringing people together and raising important funds for causes which do fantastic work in our community.
“The squad has plenty of ability on the pitch, but they uncovered their talents on the course too which was great to see. We’re so pleased the day raised a significant sum for the Hoops Foundation and wish everyone connected to the club all the best for the remainder of the season.”
Launched last month, the Hoops Foundation harnesses the power of sport to transform lives and create meaningful change.
The charity operates to fulfil five key pillars including health, opportunity, outreach, participation and support.
Jamie Murray, Chair of Trustees at the Hoops Foundation, said:
“Oxford City FC is a club truly at the heart of our local community.
“We’re fortunate to be home to an incredible fanbase and work with fantastic sponsors involved at all levels to ensure thousands of people can watch or participate in sport each week at our base.
“Establishing the Hoops Foundation means we can focus on specific projects and funds raised from our first annual golf day will play an important role in fulfilling our core goals.
“A huge thank you to Oxford Golf Club for being so welcoming on the day.”
