Our Time’s Barnet workshop for families saved thanks to grants

OUR Time is delighted to have received two grants for our Barnet KidsTime Workshop, one of £20,000 from Barnet Council and the second fund of £10,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All programme. These grants will enable the local Barnet KidsTime Workshop team to continue to support families facing the challenges of a parent’s mental illness.

This highly valued, local multi-family workshop faced an uncertain future due to a lack of funding, but thanks to these new funds, the charity is able to continue to help families coping with mental health problems, and particularly children and young people. The workshops will enable them to thrive, despite adversity.

Held monthly, these workshops give young people high quality, early support to help build resilience and break the intergenerational cycle of mental illness through drama-led interventions with the whole family.

Dympna Cunnane, Our Time CEO, said:

“The pandemic has been a really difficult time for every family, particularly those families who were already disadvantaged and vulnerable, but none so vulnerable as children and young people living with the added challenge of a parent’s mental illness. The dedicated Barnet KidsTime Workshop team have continued to support these families through the lockdowns, and I pay tribute to the families who have made it a priority to stay connected and engaged over the last year. I am very happy to be able to continue to work with Barnet families and return to face to face work this summer.”

A parent from the Barnet KidsTime Workshop said:

“KidsTime means a lot to my daughter and me. To be able to share in a safe place and not be judged, but to be welcomed and understood by staff and members is a great help.  I was not sure it was the right thing to do at first, but I am so glad and proud to say I am a member, and I now look forward to going and learning about my mental health, as well as talking to other people like me and learning things from each other.

“I no longer feel I need to be quiet and suffer and feel ashamed about what’s going on in my head. KidsTime has taught me so many tools to support me on a daily basis and to speak out about my feelings so that my daughter understands my mental health and learns to deal with the ups and downs of life, and has learnt the tools to live a happy and healthier life.

“I wish it was around when I was a kid to help my mum and me!  My daughter also loves KidsTime. She says the staff are so so nice and fun.  Lockdown has been hard, but the phone calls and the Zoom meetings have been a great help. It’s nice to know they are there and always willing to help.”
