New CEO to lead £1bn independent charitable health foundation

Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation, one of UK’s leading health foundations, announced Laurie Lee has been appointed permanent Chief Executive Officer.

Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation is an independent charitable foundation with a mission to build the foundations of a healthier society. The Foundation is the custodian of an approximately £1bn. endowment, making it one of the largest independent charitable foundations in the UK.

As Chief Executive Officer, Laurie will provide strategic leadership across the Foundation’s five routes to impact, including: Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, Evelina London Children’s Charity, Guy’s Cancer Charity and Impact on Urban Health. He has been interim CEO of the charitable foundation since April 2023.

Laurie will lead on upholding the organisation’s values and vision to create the foundations of a healthier society. He will take this role as the Foundation continues to evolve after a period of rapid expansion and growth.

The Foundation supports patients and staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust through its three NHS charities and aims to address health inequalities that disproportionately impact people living in cities through Impact on Urban Health. It primarily works in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark. The boroughs are some of the most deprived in London, and the healthy life expectancy is 13 and 15 years shorter for men and women respectively when compared to the average across London.

Laurie brings with him a wealth of experience in the charitable sector. In his previous role as Chief Executive Officer at CARE International UK, he helped to lead a coalition of organisations to achieve the 2019 global law against sexual violence and harassment at work, which protects over 500 million women in 50 countries with no domestic legal protection. He has previously held senior leadership positions at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and as a senior government advisor. He holds board positions with several other charities.

Laurie Lee, Chief Executive Officer at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation said:

“I am excited to be appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation. The vital work the Foundation does to improve health outcomes has never been more relevant. At a time when our nation’s health faces such significant and complex challenges, our mission to build the foundations of a healthier society is more urgent than ever. At the Foundation I know we have smart people, committed people, and the diverse team we need to make our ambition a reality. I am determined and confident that, together and with our people and partners, we can create the positive impact we know is needed. We will do this through our three NHS charities, Impact on Urban Health, and as an investor, to help everyone to stay healthier, for longer.”

Susanne Given, Chair of the Guy’s & St Thomas’s Foundation, said:

“We’re delighted that Laurie will be leading the organisation and the incredibly important work that we’re doing to improve health equity. He brings extensive experience to the role from across several senior charity sector and government roles. Throughout the process, Laurie embodied a deep commitment to building the foundations of a healthier society. Supported by the Board, the wider executive team and our colleagues, we have every confidence that Laurie at the helm will drive forward our mission in the coming years.”
