Mental Health Charity appoints new CEO

MENTAL health charity, The Counselling Foundation from November is set to welcome Emma Branch as the new CEO to lead their organisation into the future.

Emma who joined the Foundation’s Board of Trustees over a year ago was inspired to have greater involvement in the charity after seeing the positive impact their work had on the community through subsidised counselling sessions and professional counsellor training.

Emma has a diverse working history which began with working within residential units for 16-25-year-olds who were coming from the care system or family breakdowns, many of whom were suffering from mental health challenges. Subsequently, she has worked in consultancy with a number of large commercial organisations across both the private and public sectors. During the last eight years prior to joining the Foundation, she was a partner at KPMG holding several leadership roles.

With a genuine desire to continue to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health whilst raising awareness and funds for the charity, Emma commented on her appointment. “I am hugely excited to be taking on the role of CEO and continuing to build on the success of the Foundation. I passionately believe in our objective of promoting better mental health through the provision of counselling services and education of people in the practice of therapeutic counselling. It is a privilege to use my skills leading an organisation that makes a difference.

Emma Branch said:

“I look forward to working with colleagues across the Foundation to build upon our reputation for clinical excellence and partner with employers and community organisations alike to help increase the education and delivery of mental health support.”

The charity whose head office has been based in St Albans, Hertfordshire since 1974, has extended its services nationwide due to having an online offering as a result of Covid-19. Since March, the charity has been awarded a range of grants to help fund remote counselling for anyone on low incomes or facing financial difficulties. As a result, there are now more spaces available than ever to receive this much-needed counselling service and the Foundation welcomes self-referrals. The charity is one of the largest organisations supplying NHS counselling for free to patients via their GP.

Their services can be explored on the website: www.counsellingfoundation.org

Emma Branch formally begins her role from 1 November, taking over the baton from Robert Cuming who recently stepped down after nine years with the charity.

Julian Gell, Chair of Trustees said:

“We are placing Robert’s legacy and the Foundation’s future in the best possible hands and I thank them both for all they have done and will do for us, our clients and trainees.”
