Mencap responds to YouGov poll highlighting the impact of technology on healthcare

A survey for the Health Foundation charity of more than 4,000 adults shows that, when asked to compare technology-enabled approaches to traditional methods, 42% said it made for worse quality of care. And nearly half of those with a carer (46%) thought technology-enabled approaches had a negative impact on the quality of care.

Mencap is calling for new processes to be co-designed with the people who will be using them and properly evaluated – including people with a learning disability who already face serious barriers to accessing healthcare.

Edel Harris, Chief Executive of the learning disability charity Mencap, said:

“Technology is wonderful, but not everyone can access it, and it is worrying to hear that nearly half of those with a carer (46%) thought technology-enabled approaches have had a negative impact on the quality of care they receive. It is crucial that new processes are co-designed with the people who will be using them and properly evaluated.  Adjustments may need to be made for people with a learning disability who already face serious barriers to accessing healthcare. We cannot allow tech-driven healthcare solutions to leave them behind.”
