MapAction boosts evaluation and learning capacity with new hire

INTERNATIONAL humanitarian mapping charity MapAction has expanded its capacity to evaluate its work with the appointment of Tom Nelson to the newly created role of Head of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL). Previously MEL Advisor at Saferworld, working in conflict prevention and peacebuilding field, Nelson will help the organisation to continuously enhance the effectiveness of its work.

MEAL comprises a growing strand within the humanitarian sector and involves tracking the progress of programmes, making adjustments and assessing the outcomes to effect change across existing and upcoming projects. Nelson’s appointment reflects the experience he brings to the table in research, programme design, monitoring, accountability, evaluation and learning in international programmes. His career includes time spent working for consultancies, NGOs and the Red Cross Movement, both in the UK and internationally.

Chris Davies, Operations Director for MapAction said:

“Tom’s appointment to the team is a hugely important milestone for MapAction and reflects how far we have come as an organisation, as well as our ambitions for the future. We’re delighted to welcome him to the team and I’m looking forward to working with him to shape both the charity and upcoming projects.”

Tom Nelson said:

“In any year, there are always tremendous challenges in responding to disasters and providing humanitarian support, but this year it has been magnified as a result of COVID-19. I’m delighted to be joining the MapAction team at this critical time and being able to bring my expertise to the table and support cross-organisational learning.”
