Leading horticulture charity seeks Chair of Trustees

BROGDALE Collections, based in Faversham, is a charity responsible for managing the public’s access to and engagement with the National Fruit Collections at Brogdale Farm. It is the world’s largest collection of temperate fruits and a significant Heritage visitor attraction for Kent. Brogdale Collections is a popular and busy charity organising a range of activities including festivals and events, guided tours, education visits, courses, fruit tastings and sales.

Tony Hillier, the Charity’s Vice Chair, said:

“The National Fruit Collection at Brogdale is funded by Defra and curated by the University of Reading. Funding is only for the maintenance and research of the Collection on a scientific basis. Without Brogdale Collections Charity, the Collections would be on a closed site with no public access or engagement

“Not only is Brogdale Collections an important charity, but it is also a friendly and welcoming one. The board of trustees is responsible for managing a small team of first-class officers who are supported by a fabulous team of volunteers. I am confident that whoever takes on the role will find it extremely enjoyable and rewarding.”

The position requires the following qualities:

  • Expertise in providing strong leadership at a senior level, including chairing groups with diverse skills and experience to deliver consensus.
  • The ability to analyse and interpret detailed information such as statistical and financial data and information on legal, fundraising, policy and HR matters and to draw appropriate conclusions.
  • Able to motivate and communicate effectively, to command the respect of others, to challenge and engage courteously particularly those of opposing views, facilitating agreement across a wide range of perspectives and attitudes.
  • A background in horticulture, visitor attractions or heritage sites would be advantageous.

The time commitment for this position would equate to approximately 1-2 days per month, for which there is no remuneration. However, expenses for travelling will be considered.

The closing date for applications is 12th February 2021
