Laura is reaching out to families in the Midlands

The charity Shine has welcomed Laura Varma as its new Support and Development Worker in the Midlands.

Laura, who will be based in the Birmingham area, brings a broad experience of working with young people and families which will be invaluable as she supports people living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Having graduated from Worcester University with a degree in Education and Sports Studies, Laura worked for Staffordshire Youth Service. There she managed a youth centre and worked on initiatives including a peer education project in Ethiopia and a social inclusion project and activities for young people with disabilities. During this time she gained a national youth work qualification at Derby University.

From 2008, Laura worked for a national children’s charity, The Children’s Liver Foundation, initially as their young people’s officer and then as their support team manager. She planned and delivered family days and youth’s residentials, co-wrote literature and resources for parents and adolescents, set up and managed social media platforms and offered one-to-one support for families and young people.

Laura says: “I’ve enjoyed working in the voluntary sector and am honoured and excited to be joining the team at Shine! I am looking forward to working with families here in the Midlands.”

Laura has two young boys and enjoys exercising when she gets a spare minute in her busy schedule!

Laura will be working on a part-time basis and can be contacted by phone on 07388 994785 or via email laura.varma@shinecharity.org.uk, or via Shine’s national office on 01733 555988.
