EMMY Award-winning novelist, screenwriter and Land’s End local Patrick Gale is joining homelessness charity, Emmaus Cornwall, for an exclusive online discussion and Q&A session.
Taking place on Thursday 9 September, Patrick will be in conversation with fellow author Cathy Rentzenbrink and will be reading from his upcoming novel Mother’s Boy, due for publication in March 2022.
Living in Cornwall since 1998, Patrick is the author of 20 novels, the artistic director of the North Cornwall Book Festival, patron of Penzance LitFest and a director of both Endelienta and the Charles Causley Trust.
Patrick’s novels include Rough Music, Notes From an Exhibition, the Costa-nominated A Place Called Winter, and most recently, Take Nothing With You. In 2017, Patrick’s Man in an Orange Shirt was screened as a two-part movie by BBC2 as part of the Gay Britannia season, winning a 2018 International Emmy Award for Best TV Movie or Miniseries.
Commenting on his support of Emmaus Cornwall, Patrick said:
“You can’t live anywhere in Cornwall and not be aware of the twin spectres of homelessness and joblessness haunting your community. With housing prices galloping out of the reach of even those in essential, apparently stable jobs like nursing and teaching, Emmaus’ imaginative work in providing training and skills alongside help with housing is needed more than ever.”
Currently, Emmaus Cornwall is fundraising to set up a residential community in the Duchy to support people out of homelessness. The charity has a £1million fundraising target to establish its community and social enterprises, which will then provide a home with no time limit, work experience, daily support, and training to help people rebuild their lives.
The Patrick Gale event follows three successful evenings hosted by Emmaus Cornwall earlier this year with authors Raynor Winn, Terry Waite, and James Bowen, which raised a total of £6,800.
Jo Riley, a trustee at Emmaus Cornwall, said:
“We are delighted that Patrick is joining us and helping to support our fundraising goals. Each of our previous online events, expertly hosted by Cathy, have been inspiring and moving, with people participating from all over the world. Patrick’s conversation promises to be just as fascinating, and we hope that people will join us.”
