Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home have been rescuing, reuniting, and rehoming lost and abandoned cats and dogs from across Edinburgh and the Lothians since 1883.
Over these past 136 years, we have provided life-saving veterinary care, food, water and training to thousands of animals. In 2018, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home cared for 2,367 dogs and 771 cats from across Scotland.
We take in any dog or cat that comes through our doors, despite breed age or medical condition. Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home work with the local dog wardens and police to provide a safe place for abandoned, lost or stray dogs and cats. Nearly 50% of the animals that come to the Home are happily reunited with their owners. If an owner cannot be found, our staff work tirelessly to find the perfect forever home for every animal, no matter how long that takes.
In February, we launched an urgent appeal to find a home for our longest resident, Star. This lovable Staffordshire Bull Terrier was abandoned in a derelict building and brought to the Home by the police five years ago. Star showed signs of significant neglect, was substantially underweight and had claws so long they curled painfully underneath the pad of his paw. It was clear to our staff that this little guy was lucky to be alive, so they nicknamed him their ‘lucky’ Star. Star received all the veterinary care he needed and was provided with lots of training to help him heal both physically and mentally.
Unfortunately, after 1,800 days at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, he is still looking for his perfect match. Although we will be sad to see Star leave, we are desperate for him to find a loving forever home.
