Chipping Sodbury fundraisers celebrate fifth-anniversary

Hardworking fundraisers have celebrated the fifth anniversary of a South Gloucestershire charity shop.

Barnardo’s opened a new store in Hatherall’s Yard, off the High Street in Chipping Sodbury, in 2014.

Since then the team have received more than 18,000 bags of donations and more than 10,000 hours of support from local volunteers.

The money raised helps to support the charity’s work with vulnerable children and young people across the UK.

To celebrate their success, staff and volunteers gathered with a specially-decorated cake.

The Barnardo’s store is managed by Jo Ridler – who was adopted through Barnardo’s as a child – and store associates Denise Sprackman and Paula Barton.

They are supported by a team of 30 volunteers aged from 14 to 84 years old.

Jo said:

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last five years, not only our dedicated volunteers – who are all amazing – but also the donors and shoppers who have contributed to our success.

“We feel very lucky to have received so many generous donations, some of which have raised surprising sums after we researched their value online.

“These included a Victorian hidden photo frame which sold for more than £100 and a crazy pair of shoes which also sold for more than £100 – you never know what you’ll find!”

Jo added:

“Our team have so much fun together, organising raffles, tombolas and cake sales, as well as getting involved in community events including the popular Victorian Day every December when we all love to dress up.

“Some of our volunteers have gained more confidence and social skills and gone to on paid employment, while others simply enjoy supporting a worthy cause.

“Whatever their reason for joining us, every hour is sincerely appreciated.”

The Barnardo’s store is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and on Sundays from 10am-4pm.

The team always welcome donations of good-quality clothes, books, toys, games, accessories and bric-a-brac, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers.
