RESIDENTS and staff at Friends of the Elderly’s Orford House care home in Coulsdon have come together to celebrate a special milestone, marking resident Brenda Willson’s 90th birthday with an afternoon tea party.
The celebration featured balloons, cards, gifts and a birthday cake, as fellow residents and the care team joined Brenda to mark the occasion.
Brenda, who moved to Orford House in March 2025, said she quickly settled into life at the home.
Brenda Willson said:
“It’s lovely here. There’s nothing not to like and nothing to be unhappy about.”
Originally from Dartford in Kent, Brenda recalled a happy childhood and a lifelong love of reading and history. She also enjoyed gymnastics and continues to keep active, regularly taking part in exercise sessions at the home.
After leaving school, Brenda trained as a nurse and worked for the NHS, describing her career as both rewarding and varied.
Brenda Willson said:
“I loved being a nurse. Caring for people who needed help was incredibly fulfilling.”
Later, Brenda stepped away from her nursing career to support her daughter Pamela by helping raise her grandchildren, a role she fondly described as being a ‘Granny Nanny’.
Brenda has also enjoyed travelling across Europe with her family, with Italy among her favourite destinations, alongside regular holidays in Devon and Cornwall.
At Orford House, she continues to lead an active and social lifestyle, taking part in activities including music, singing and exercise.

“Brenda is a wonderful lady and a joy to have with us. Her caring nature really shines through in how she interacts with others.”
Mary Bradley, Activities Coordinator at Orford House, said:
“Brenda is always keen to get involved, especially in activities involving music or exercise.”
The team organised the birthday celebration to reflect Brenda’s favourite things, bringing residents together for a shared afternoon of food and companionship.
Brenda Willson said:
“I’ve had a wonderful birthday and have been spoilt. I’ve made so many friends here, and there’s always something going on – I’m never bored.”
