CHARITY TODAY AWARDS

Bingley veteran Jeffrey Long, 88, raises over £1,500 for charity

JEFFREY Long MBE, a military and fundraising veteran from Yorkshire, has raised £1,628 for The Care Workers’ Charity after a gruelling 100-mile walk.

The challenge, named ‘Jeffrey’s Walk for Carers’, saw the 88-year old visit care homes in the Bradford District to raise awareness of the heroic efforts of social care workers. Racking up over 100 miles visiting ten care homes over nine days, Jeffrey is now set to visit his eleventh care home, Currergate Care Home today.

At each care home he visited, Jeffrey has been welcomed with enthusiasm and support by team members. One home noted how Jeffrey’s campaign was deeply impactful and that staff were amazed by his continued efforts.

Receiving £1,628 through online and offline donations, Jeffrey says he will continue walking if donations continue to stream in. All proceeds from his walk will be donated to The Care Workers’ Charity, a charity who provide current and former care workers with crisis grants.

‘Jeffrey’s Walk for Carers’ is just the latest charitable campaign the veteran has embarked on.

Starting his charitable activities when he was 75, Jeffrey has gone on to raise over £300,000 through daring challenges, such as walking from London to Switzerland while carrying a 30kg backpack.

Jeffrey’s fundraising efforts were recognised after he was awarded an MBE in 2010 for his voluntary services and received praise from former Prime Minister Theresa May who said Jeffrey had ‘inspired millions of people’.

Speaking of his achievement and future plans, Jeffrey said:

“It has been wonderful to visit so many amazing care homes to see first-hand the high-quality care they provide. I was always received with enthusiasm and everyone I met was so friendly.

“While doing the challenge I received many words of encouragement, including friendly waves, thumbs up and car horns tooting. I have also given away handkerchiefs since the lockdown began to bring a smile to people, must be about 300 now!

“The Care Workers’ Charity is an exemplary organisation who provide crucial support to our social care heroes. It’s been an honour to support them during this testing time and I look forward to raising more money as Jeffrey’s Walk for Carers continues!”

Emily Barnett, Partnership and Events Manager at The Care Workers’ Charity said:

“Jeffrey’s Walk for Carers has been a remarkable fundraiser for The Care Workers’ Charity. Jeffrey has been walking each day, meeting care workers and spreading joy. It has been a pleasure to follow Jeffrey’s journey, donate if you can to support Jeffrey and to support care workers”.
