Advice to “stay safe and stay hydrated” this weekend as temperatures soar

As the Met Office issues a Level 3 amber ‘Extreme Heat Warning’ the team behind the award-winning Refill app has issued advice on how to find free drinking water when out and about this weekend. The award-winning Refill app maps over 30,508 water refill points around the UK, with 25,955 refill points in England alone.

The advice to Brits to stay safe and stay hydrated comes as temperatures are expected to soar to well above 30 degrees and some sporting events considering cancellation. The London Ambulance ServiceCouncils and London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, have reiterated their call for people to download the Refill App to help find their nearest water fountains or places to get free water on the go.

The Refill app maps hundreds of thousands of “refill stations” – places you can refill your water bottle for free – across the UK. Major high-street brands such as Costa Coffee, Greggs and Morrisons supermarket have all signed up to offer free drinking water along with hundreds of National Trust and English Heritage properties.

As well as helping Brits stay hydrated, the app also helps people save on their plastic. The Refill campaign saves over 100 million plastic bottles from entering our waste stream every year by helping consumers find free refills instead of having to buy single-use plastic bottles. City to Sea, the charity behind the Refill app, estimates that if 1 in 10 Brits refilled just once a week around 340 million plastic bottles a year would be saved.

Steve Hynd, City to Sea’s Policy Manager said:

“As the UK heats up this weekend it’s important people know where to access free drinking water to stay hydrated and to stay safe. Small regular sips of water are going to be key as temperatures could soar above 30 degrees. The Refill app lets people do this without buying expensive and polluting single-use plastic water bottles.”

He continued, “So when you head out the door this weekend make sure you pick up a reusable water bottle, download the refill app and stay safe and stay hydrated.”
