Adopt-A-Child: Spreading Joy & Hope at Christmas

EACH year at Adopt-A-Child we organise a special Christmas event for all the children who are registered in our programmes, whether they have a sponsor or not.

Usually, all the children will gather at the centre for a Nativity presentation and a special Christmas meal. Each child also receives a Christmas gift and for many, this will be the only gift they will receive, as families just can’t afford anything in the way of extras.

This year will have to be a little different due to all the COVID-19 restrictions, but in many ways, it is more important than ever to be able to spread a little joy and hope this Christmas time.  It has been an even more difficult year for the poorest in Guatemala and Albania, as work and travel restrictions have resulted in the loss of even the small incomes that they had before.

In Albania, the children will be receiving school supplies as their Christmas gift from the ministry this year. As the families are struggling to provide food due to Covid, the team have realised that with the schools now reopening, school supplies, though needed by the children, will be low on the list of priorities. This gift will include items like a school bag plus notebook, pencil, pens etc. The younger children will receive colouring books, pencils, stickers etc. instead of school supplies.

As lack of food is still the major issue in Guatemala, for Christmas the families are going to receive a big parcel with groceries and Christmas things to eat. Every child also is going to receive a bag that will have a Christmas plate and a glass with some sweets, chocolates, crisps, juice and biscuits.

As our centres are all still closed, these gifts will all have to be individually delivered to the families in their homes – a huge undertaking for our staff in both countries, but something they are keen to be able to do to bring some joy to the children and their families, with deliveries starting at the end of November.

Wishing you all peace and love this Christmas season from all of us at Adopt-A-Child UK.
