Adopt-A-Child: Spreading Joy & Hope at Christmas – Part 2

FIRST of all, we want to wish everyone a Happy New Year from all of us here at Living Water Adopt-A-Child and we do pray that things will begin to open up again soon and we will be able to get out and about and meet up with many of you again later this year. We also want to thank all our supporters for continuing to sponsor and donate towards the work we are doing.

Towards the end of last year, we wrote about the challenges facing our teams in Guatemala and Albania as they endeavoured to bring some joy and hope to struggling families, delivering a special Christmas gift at the end of what had been a particularly difficult year. As our centres are still unable to open due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions, the gifts had to be delivered to each individual home – a huge task.

We are delighted to say that our teams were able to complete this task in December – delivering food parcels and Christmas cups and plates in Guatemala and school supplies and treats in Albania –  before having a well-earned break themselves over Christmas and New Year.  While these items may not seem very exciting to us, they are a huge blessing and very welcome in Guatemala and Albania. The reaction our staff teams received from the children and families when they delivered a gift made all the extra work worthwhile. Smiles and happy tears all round!

Guatemala Roof Repair

We also run an Alternative Gifts Scheme, where people can buy items for struggling families in Guatemala and Albania in lieu of a present for friends and family members, receiving a card with details of the gift to pass on to the recipient. These include things like chickens, building supplies, medical help and many more. The Alternative Gifts bought by many of our supporters in the run-up to Christmas 2020 are already beginning to bring real benefit to families. One of the gifts available to buy is building supplies to help repair or replace substandard homes, of which there are many in Guatemala and Albania.

One project, already completed, in Guatemala replaced the roof on the home of one family.  Lencho faithfully attends our Tunaja Program and, along with his family, attends our local Church. Their roof was badly in need of repair, so Living Water Adopt-A-Child purchased the materials and the men from the local church installed the new roof, making a huge difference to the living conditions of the whole family. We are looking forward to being able to help many more families in this way in the months ahead.

Although most Alternative Gifts are bought as Christmas presents, these are available all year round for birthday and anniversary gifts, for example. It is a great way to mark a birthday or anniversary with an unusual gift that blesses more than just the one receiving it.
