10-year-old Alder Hey patient completes 5k for hospital’s charity

10-year-old Harry Corfield from Southport ran the Running Bee Foundation’s Alder Hey Children’s Charity 5k fun run to give back to those that cared for him.

Diagnosed with developmental dysplasia of the hip at 16 months old, Harry then attended Alder Hey at 21 months for an operation to reconstruct his pelvis and create a stronger hip joint.

He wore a full hip cast for 10 weeks and had his hip pins removed 10 months later.

Harry attends Alder Hey regularly for check-ups, and during his most recent appointment, he spotted a leaflet for a 5k run. Having recently finding a passion for running after completing the Couch to 5k during the lockdown, he knew that he wanted to challenge himself and step out onto the start line.

The Alder Hey Children’s Charity Fun Run is an event by The Running Bee Foundation and takes runners on a journey through Haydock Park Racecourse. The parkland course creates an excellent atmosphere for runners of all levels.

The young footballer says he was nervous before the run, but that nervousness quickly turned to excitement.

Lining up with the other runners at the beginning was fantastic for Harry, he also enjoyed seeing Oli the Elephant – a famous character at Alder Hey.

Sprinting as fast as he could across the finish line, Harry completed the race in style and completed the 5k distance in an amazing 34 minutes and 4 seconds.

The young superstar had an amazing time during his race and is now looking to complete another 5k in October to raise further funds for Alder Hey.

Following his efforts, Harry has raised a whopping £702 – an amount that will help the charity to create bright futures for over 900 babies, children and young people every day.

Harry’s mother, Rachel Corfield, said:

“Every single member of the Alder Hey team that we have met along the way has been absolutely amazing – from the surgeon who conducted the operation, the anaesthetist who reassured me, the receptionists who greet us every time we go for an appointment to the staff in the café who have nothing but smiles – Alder Hey is so fabulous.”

Alder Hey Children’s Charity Fun Run is an event by The Running Bee Foundation which was founded and is supported by Sports Tours International. The profits from this event will be donated to assist the hospital.

The Running Bee Foundation champions health and wellbeing initiatives to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle and help in the fight to reduce childhood obesity.
